Title: HAPPY BIRTHDAY DP!!!
Post by: ViciouZ on July 28, 2008, 06:11:04 AM: On July 31st 1998, the first ever public beta of Digital Paintball II was released. In 3 days, Digital Paint: Paintball will be 10 years old.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!_{in 3 days time}

Now, the reason I've made this post today, is that I was, as a GG ComRep, I was organising some celebration - a DM ladder and mapping contests scheduled to start on July 31st - but I won't be here for the next week and I therefore can't put anything into practice. Also, QuakeCon means that some of the GG staff won't be able to be around on that day either.

So, if you want to, it's now up to the community to organise something. If you speak to the remaining GG staff I'm sure they will provide you with help for a tournament or DM ladder. When I get back, I will organise another mapping contest, but for now, any celebrations are up to you!

Still needed Q2 - it'll be a few years before the standalone :P

I don't think I've met someone who is under 10 and plays this. I was 6 when this game came out.

I started playing shortly after the move to Q2.
Cal, Jits, and Nutekit(sp) were the staff at the time.

There were only a handful of maps. The standard release maps, and a few that people had just began making. Everything was great right up until Crates (by Fryth i think?).

The clan to beat was Smurfs, hands down. Fembot was, to me, the best player at the time.

I remember one fine day going to DPCon2 in WashingtonDC, or VA or somewhere there abouts. This poor 15 year old kid that had worked so hard building model and creating graphics for DP had no way to make it there. So I turned an eight hour drive into a 13 hour drive and swung by and picked him up. What a different time that was where a mom and dad would let a virtual internet stranger take their 15 year old son away for a weekend LOL.

I remember we had to stop at a truck stop and buy some tarps to cover our computer equipment because it started to snow on the way.

Fun times.

No one had dsl. Cable modems were few and far between.

Awesome, i'll try that when I get home from school. Its funny how the menu's are still q2 based in it. When did that change?

I don't think any game has or ever will come close to creating such a tight knit community of players. Many thanks go out to Jit, Cal, and everyone else involved in the creation of one of the best games ever made.
