Title: Build 27
Post by: jitspoe on April 14, 2009, 10:52:32 PM
Not a lot of new stuff.  I'm just trying to get new builds out every month.  This includes the fix for the crouch death animation bug, surface specific splat sound effects, and some improved sound resampling.

Update: http://digitalpaint.epicfail.us/files/paintball2_build027_update_pretest1.exe
Full install: http://digitalpaint.epicfail.us/files/paintball2_build027_full_pretest1.exe
Server game DLL (installers are missing it): http://dplogin.com/files/servers/gamex86_1916.zip
Linux server update: http://digitalpaint.epicfail.us/files/paintball2_build027_linux_serverupdate_pretest1.tar.gz

Might not make a client Linux build this time around since I'm having issues...

Code: [Select]
WHAT'S NEW:

build027 (2009-04-15):
- Tweak: Added sleep to server loop to hopefully prevent crashed servers from eating all CPU.
- Cvar: s_resamplequality - If set, sound resampling will use a linear algorithm to improve quality of non-48khz sound files.
- Cvar: s_resamplevolume - Since new sounds are quieter to avoid clipping, old non-48khz sounds will be scaled down by this value (default is 0.5, 50%).
- Cvar: s_force48khz - Enabled by default, sound settings are forced to high quality (48khz).  If you wish to use
- Media: Surface specific splat sounds.
- Media: New 68 Carbine and VM-68 recordings.
- Media: Fixed admin map changing menu.

Code: [Select]
*** 1.916 build 165 ***
- Fixed crouch death animation bug.

Wasn't that a server side bug?  If so, you'd have to connect to a Build 27 server.

Title: Re: Build 27

Title: Re: Build 27

Maybe it is only on my computer, but the sounds are a little bit muffled now.
The s_resamplequality option is set to 2 by default, what is 1 ?
The volume setting and the surface specific splat sound are very nice :)
Title: Re: Build 27
Post by: jitspoe on April 17, 2009, 08:50:28 AM
Maybe it is only on my computer, but the sounds are a little bit muffled now.
You might try playing with the s_resamplevolume setting.  Since I got several complaints about the new sounds being too quiet (they had to be made quieter to avoid clipping), I made it so all the non-48khz sounds could be scaled down so the new sounds are louder, relatively.  By default, the resamplevolume is set to 0.5 (50%).  You could set it higher.

Quote
The s_resamplequality option is set to 2 by default, what is 1 ?
1 and 2 do the same thing now.  At some point, I may add a better resampling algorithm, which would use the value 2, so I made that the default.  Now it just uses a super simple linear algorithm.
Title: Re: Build 27
Post by: T3RR0R15T on April 17, 2009, 04:05:20 PM
The volume is good at 50%.

In build 26 the old sounds are clear, but now they are *** (i don't know, how to explain).

Another thing 1: I saw there are the sounds endgame5.wav and endgame6.wav. I can't remember that i heared this sounds ingame. Maybe u forgot to change something, that only the endgame 1-4 sounds are used?
Another thing 2: Shouldn't the flagpass.wav sound be in the flag folder?

3iob pub was updated yesterday morning.  It does not look like the crouch bug is fixed.  Unless its only fixed for the new models?   I also cant hear any of the surface sounds... It just seems like the sound of your gun shooting overpowers the sound of the paintball splat.

The 3iob pub server has version 164. It is fixed in version 165. Looks like there is only a new paintball2.exe file, but not the new gamex86.dll file.

The volume is good at 50%.

type "s_resamplequality 0; snd_restart" at the console.  That will switch it back to how it was in previous builds.  To me, it sounds like runnig a cheese grater on my eardrum.  Perhaps you've gotten used to the jagged wave forms?  Switch back and forth between 0 and 1, and grab/drop a flag a few times.  I think you'll find the new resampling sounds better/is less painful.

Quote
Another thing 1: I saw there are the sounds endgame5.wav and endgame6.wav. I can't remember that i heared this sounds ingame. Maybe u forgot to change something, that only the endgame 1-4 sounds are used?
Looks like 1-4 are the only ones used.  I've changed it to use 1-5 for the next version.  6 wasn't even in the right format, anyway.

Quote
Another thing 2: Shouldn't the flagpass.wav sound be in the flag folder?
Should.  There are several things I don't like about the sound structure/file names, but if I change them now, it means everybody will probably re-downloading sounds off of the server, wasting a bunch of bandwidth.  Maybe I'll restructure things if I do a major release.

Its not possible for me to actually run the .exe through ftp, so I get someone at xtremecyber games to do it... It should be installed properly.  Any other reasons this could happen???

I will check with my guy to make sure he did everything properly to make sure.

Edit:  Looks like we found the issue, should be updated soon.

...no time or problems to build it?
Meh, Linux is a piece of crap.  Updated it at some point because I needed a new library or something, and now it won't boot xwindows because it doesn't recognize my touch pad pointer device.  I made a build a couple days ago, but I can't test the client.  The dedicated server seems to work, though.  I haven't had a chance to package it since I was at a paintball scenario, plus we're in the middle of relocating at work.  Things have been pretty crazy lately.
Title: Re: Build 27

Jitspoe in build 28 are you going to fix the bug that we were talking about the crouch thing? Because it is still happening and it's really annoying.
Title: Re: Build 27
Post by: ViciouZ on April 28, 2009, 04:48:36 PM
The bug is fixed in build 27 as repeatedly stated. However, jitspoe cannot magically make the problems stop, the server admins have to get build 27. Seeing as most servers are on linux, and jits hasn't managed to package the linux server yet, it is not going to 'fixed' for a while yet. Now grow some patience :D

Jitspoe -  Linux isn't crap maybe the distribution you are running is....

Almost every game that has a linux version is slightly faster on my setup (nvidia 8500)

There is a lot to be said for meta distro's (no verions just constant upgrades)
(also any linux user should check out ext4 - fsck is about 200%  faster... boot up is also quicker)

Most distro's no longer need xorg.conf to run (I always use one to tweak settings) try temporarily removing it (ie mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/conf-

Although paintball is my favourite game the linux client version does suck (random crashes are not cool..)

I can possibly help fix your  X issue - try posting/attaching your

/var/log/Xorg.0.log

Personally I do not use ubuntu (its too slow)

Heh, no, it wasn't ... and I'm to blame for the server-switching. If I end up staying with my current host for any length of time, the files will remain in NY.

You're still running the 1.915 version of gamex86.dll.  1.916 comes with build 27.  You must have just copied the paintball2.exe over or somehow missed some files.
Title: Re: Build 27

b16 is very good, but to play in OTB servers you need b26, not bad, but I agree with Rocky I can't ear a think, and althought I like the effects of the balls in the barrels, I don't like some guns sounds.

Did you turn the game volume up?  The new sounds are quieter to avoid clipping, and as a result, you'll have to turn your volume up a bit.

Jitspoe - did you re-install in the end ? (you were running a mix of stable/unstable debian)

If your having any linux issue please feel free to message me .

I've passed LPI (so am now certified..)

I'm going to follow ViciouZ's advice (i'll use gdb too) and see if it still segfaults...

Haven't even had time to touch Linux recently, to be honest.  If you can try to debug paintball 2 and figure out where it's crashing, though, that would be helpful.
