Title: Committee Elections
Post by: jitspoe on September 18, 2007, 12:35:22 AM
The committee will consist of about 10  members and will help decide punishments for rule violations and other inappropriate behavior as well as help settle disputes over names, clan tags, and other issues that need to be dealt with on a case by case basis.  If you want more details, visit the Committee Nominations thread (http://dplogin.com/forums/index.php?topic=8968.0).

You may select up to 10 people, however you may want to vote for fewer if you don't feel familiar enough with the candidates to select 10 you're comfortable with.  Vote for people you feel will be active and responsible.  Voting will close in 2 weeks.

A) The person who nominated you had the same IP, so it looked like a self-nomination.  I'm not sure if it was, but it doesn't matter, because:

The committee should be rotational and serve only short terms.

This eliminates the popular vote theory and also insures:

1. Effectiveness.

2. New Ideas.

Logic should dictate not a popular vote.

I think the committee should start with something like 5 members, if any more members are needed another community poll would be done.

Same thing should apply if a member leaves the committe, do another poll.

I would bet this months salary that jitpsoe's selection would be a lot more useful for the committee than this community vote.  Even I am ahead of people like Y2J and DT as I write, although they have been around much longer and thus know the community better than I do. Additionally, many people who are not really involved into the community have received a fair amount of votes, just because they are "popular", and not because they would fit into the committee.

Yeah I've been pretty destructive. Writing numerous guides, helping newbies countless times with map problems, being one of two original founders of the most well-composed league in DP history that integrated europeans and north americans as well as creating 31 maps for the game and bringing the first professional esports team into the game.

I also laugh at newbies misfortunes. I guess that makes me unqualified.

I do however agree with Bain that this is merely a popularity contest and about as illegitimate as the actual voting of representatives for our own government. However, if there is to be a committee that might determine certain things about the matching scene 20ID needs to have a voice on it.

Just because I haven't played dp for 5-10 years, doesn't make me any less of a candidate for committee.  And also, I would just like to point out that just because neither of you got nominated (thank god) this doesn't give you a valid reason to start a rant like a teenage girl.

Please don't try to insult me or belittle me.

We all know that I will not tolerate this.

We all know you will make a fool of yourselves.

We all know "you don't care"

But just leave this game.  please, for the benefit of all the players, and future players of DP.  Leave.

I don't think I need to explain myself further.

Title: Re: Committee Elections
Post by: Reed on September 24, 2007, 09:07:28 PM
There seems to be some debate about the legitimacy of this committee election.

Usually, in most forms of election, the voters have a vast amount of knowledge to base their decisions on, whether it be policies, personalities, or previous performance.

However, with no previous committee in place it becomes difficult to judge how any particular candidate would perform; the majority of players do not know each other beyond the realms of DP; and it would be unrealistic to expect each candidate to have a manifesto (no matter how hilarious they would be).

The electorate then, has only a limited amount of information to base their decisions on – the behaviour of the candidate within the community, which is directly correlated with the candidates’ popularity, and the personal relationships (clan ties and outside the game) which the candidate has with certain voters, which can help to explain anomalies in this correlation (i.e. unpopular players who have a large percentage of votes). The other major factor which can affect a candidates popularity is their power within the game, for example Jitspoe (who, of course, has most of his admirers because of his good looks, and helpful attitude – most of the time :D) gains some popularity because he has the power to make changes within the game and the community. The same can be said for ‘veteran’ players, who are perceived to have more power, knowledge, and influence within the community.

So, it can be reasonably said that to expect anything more than a vote predominantly decided by popularity would be somewhat naïve. Therefore, if candidates cannot accept their standings in this so-called popularity contest, then they should have graciously declined their prior nominations.

Finally, I think it’s important for candidates to understand that they will be judged not on their positive actions, but on the negative.

Dr Reed.

In a perfect world, yes. I think the analysis of this vote as a popularity contest can be likened to a presidential vote, which we would hope voters have this vast amount of knowledge you speak of. However, the overwhelming majority of 'voters' have very little knowledge at all about candidates in a presidential election. Most simply identify themselves with a certain political party because their friends do or because they think it makes them unique and pseudo-intellectual in some way and vote accordingly. This, in a sense, makes the vote as illegitimate as a popularity vote is. In this vote I'm sure voters identify themselves with particular candidates based on their interactions with them and the groups that the candidate hangs out in. In fact I'm very sure a lot of the voters have a lot more knowledge of particular candidates than voters do in a presidential election (direct interaction for example). However, there are no age restrictions, no restrictions at all really so people without the appropriate abilities to critically think about 'who will make the right decisions given certain bodies of evidence' can vote simply by recognizing names they see in public servers or in map titles (the candidate election thread is a great example). And as we all know from playing in over populated public servers, this sect of people I'm speaking of often outweigh map votes just in the same way they could be outweighing this vote. So ultimately, while there is a small section of voters in this vote that actually do think about the candidates and the issues the majority either don't care or simply don't have the cognitive resources to do so. This maps seamlessly to the presidential election and hence demonstrates where the one is illegitimate, so is the other.

Forgot to address this earlier:

umm f theres voting within the committee and thers 10 people that wont really work that well?(for retards that 5 and 5 for each side in certain cases) or will jits be the eleventh member?
If the voting is close enough that one person makes or breaks it, the issue probably needs more review.  Ideally I'd like to get closer to a 2/3 majority vote or even a unanimous decision.

I thought maybe the 10-member setup was going to be like 10 members with 9 voters and they rotate so one person is the moderator of the discussion... That's how it is in the NPPL Rules Commitee (of real paintball, not that knock-off NPPL clan...).

Jitspoe,

What are the Committee ethical guidelines? Also i noticed you can vote for repeated and one time 'felons'. WTF?

With out these guidelines this committee is just as 'popular election'.

I wish the committee electorates to swear to a strict set of ethics before elections and be held accountable for all actions:

1. Forum posting.

2. In-game ethics.

3. Communications assistance and friendly help.

Please help define these......for the sake of progress and fairness.

Without these guidelines you will have this leading.....(insert jpg below *read bottom to top and notice how "drunk" enough to act like a gentlement.... ADMINS why is Bain's conjecture still posted?)

I don't want this leading the game I am playing and support.

So do most others..

Ethics for the committee please.

*This is not a personal attack on you, just a question of your loyalty, because it seems you now care as equally as we all do.

What I am saying is you accept your selection as a committee member but yet you could care less about others or growth.

Direct answers to the proving needed. I am not attacking you personally. I don't know you, nor do any of you know me.

But I am questioning (your, and anyone nominated) stances, ethics and commitment to the committee.

Before and or after elections will you abide to sportsmanship, ethics and the general good of this game and its community?

With out this there will be no legitimate election. Or electors.

I call for an audio conference...or debate about what is best for the game........please see here. This should put any hard feelings or arguments to a rest. If recorded.

We are all adults and this can be done to make the game legitimate instead of leetist.

I think committee members should be as diverse as possible.
From what I understand, an elected committee member can be removed if they do not perform their described committee duties.

I think the system will work itself out.
Looks like all the 14 or so people realistically in the running for the 10 spots are diverse, and would do very well.

I totally agree S8N.

Even though this appears as a popularity contest, every diverse group of users voted for their own favorites, which on that action alone, made this a diverse group.

First off, loial, just because you think a certain set of ethical principles should be upheld for a committee gives us no reason to agree with you. If I believe a set of different principles, perhaps contradictory to yours, should be upheld, there is no further principle by which we can appeal to to make either of our arguments more plausible. This is the fundamental problem of ethics. Ethical arguments cannot be resolved in any straight forward objective way. So please for the sake of everyone on this forum don't vomit out what you think 'committee members should be held too.' At the very least, if we wanted principles for committee members to be held too, we'd have to vote on these too to incorporate some notion of fairness. We aren't just going to have a committee run by loial-principles so he can push his agenda through.

Furthermore if you're worried about me being on the committee, even if i were elected I've decided i would decline being on it for very strong reasons i won't mention here. Yes i have a fairly negative attitude toward this game, but at least i would keep people like you from pushing naive, polarized legislation through this committee.

In sum, i think the most important part of that pm loial posted is this (which is also now a classic idiotquote):

<l21> my point is from a fundemetal warrior aspect

Do you people really want this on your committee?

I multiplied votes by age.  You really only got 1 vote.

I kid, I kid.

I checked through the list of voters and only a few were questionable - maybe 5 - not enough to cause a significant difference in the outcome, and they may still have been legit, so I'm just going to go with what we have here.  I think it's a good mix.  Basically everybody with over 50 votes is in.  That makes it simple.

WarWulf: To be honest, I didn't vote for Calrathan.  He has more important things to do than deal with disputes and rule breakers, and I don't think he'd be around enough on a regular basis to keep up with all the committee discussions.
