Ideas for Streaming Media
« on: March 02, 2010, 04:31:34 PM »
Basically I'm looking for some plausible ideas on how I could stream my media library out to wherever I want. I have an extensive movie collection on a few external hard drives, a server running Ubuntu, and a very robust internet connection. What I would like to do is be able to access my media from anywhere. Anyone have any ideas?

So what situation are you wanting to set up? Are you talking about plugging the HD's into the server, and gain access to them? If thats what you'r thinking of doing, then wait for someone else to answer... I've only used Ubuntu once... :P

I'm looking for any way to stream my digital content out so I can access it when I'm not at home with decent quality. Remote login solutions do not work. So basically I'd like to turn my server into a media server accessible over the Internet. My own personal online On-Demand library.

You could try WinAmp remote, dunno how well it works but you make a login and then can access your whole winamp library from a web browser. (assuming where you're going has internet and a computer.)

Curious if skitzo's idea worked for you.

As a note I just checked it out to try and access it here at my grandmother's and the host computer needs to be runnning the winamp remote program in order to access it.

There was some software I used a while ago that did exactly what you are looking for.  Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of it for the life of me.  It was a web interface that used php, the getID3() library, and  the JW Player.  If I somehow remember it, I'll post a link here.

That might come in handy, even if the screenshots are a bit out of date.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to give a crack at this now that I'm home from vacation.
