Amazon EC2 for Dedicated Paintball2 Servers?
« on: January 24, 2015, 10:27:56 PM »
Amazon offers an "Elastic Compute Cloud" service, that basically charges only for the amount of resources used.  Since Paintball2 isn’t that resource intensive, it would be a lot cheaper to use something like this for hosting servers than the typical colocation servers.  Has anybody tried hosting game servers with this?  I’m curious how well it would work.  It looks like they have a free trial, if anybody wants to test it.  I don't really have time to mess with it right now.

I looked into EC2 once upon a tiime but decided a small VPS is a better deal. I'm running Speed USA, Shock USA and Siege USA on a Linux VPS with 128 MB RAM and 250 GB bandwidth. The one-time price was just $7 per year. That's less than 2 cents per day for 24/7/365 use.

When my special deal expires, I'll move the servers to a $15 VPS (128 MB RAM and 500 GB bandwidth) that I use for web sites. About 4 cents per day.

The Amazon EC2 free trial is limited to 15 GB bandwidth per month. A popular server needs 50-100 GB per month.

Let me know if your EC2 mileage differs.

Wow! That's insanely cheap.  How much storage space do you have with that?

Let me know some info, we have been looking for a replacement server for a kick and jump server over in q2. This seems awesome and doable.

Bwahahaha! Believe me, I've launched normal servers, but nobody was interested. Gotta give the kids what they want.

Here's an introduction to the world of so-called "Low End Boxes".

1. Visit http://www.lowendstock.com for a list of cheap VPSes around the world.

WARNING: The cheapest ones (as low as a dollar per year!) do not provide IP4 addresses, only IP6. Also, many cheap VPSes are poor performing, or may go out of business tomorrow.

2. Visit http://www.lowendbox.com for special deals, reviews and user comments.  You can learn which VPS operators are reputable.

I recommend RamNode. For $15 per year, you can get a fast server with a small SSD drive, or a slower server with more hard drive space. They have locations throughout the U.S. and also in Europe.  Visit http://www.ramnode.com.

BuyVM also has been a reputable provider for a number of years, and also offers $15 servers in the U.S. and Europe. Visit http://www.buyvm.net.

Reliability is certainly the most important (we certainly don't want the dplogin services going down if I switch).  Looks like I might need more storage than most of these have to offer.  I think I'd need at least 80 gigs, especially if I start adding stats tracking, though.

Picked up a 128 ram, 80gb storage, 500gb bandwidth from ramnode for 15 a year. So far it seems people are having zero issues with it. Really low ping, and constant connection.

I manage five VPS boxes from BuyVM, and the only issues I've had were my own fault (like accidentally DDoSing myself).  One box runs a webserver and IRC client, another runs a small FTP fileserver, a storage VPS runs an IRC XDCC bot, and the last two I use as seedboxes.

All their plans come with one IPv4 address and a choice of either sixteen IPv6 addresses or an entire /64 subnet.

Those look like the best options as far as storage/pricing goes, but I wish it had a more central location.  I guess maybe Atlanta would ping better to Europe than Texas would, but it would probably be worse for the west coast US players.

Still probably wouldn't be *that* bad.

Castlegem isn't specifically cheap, but they are very reliable.
