Community Model Pack
« on: July 17, 2007, 04:51:47 PM »
Surprise surprise eh?

With so many good modellers in the community, naturally the model pack has become it's own entity.

Same thing applies as with the CTP.

Model Criteria:

-Well done
-Detailed
-.blend, .wings, or .3ds format.

Optional
-Properly UVMapped skin (recommended though)
-.smd, .skm, or .max format.

GPL stuff still apples.

ZIP SUBMISSIONS WITH .TXT GIVING PERMISSION TO THE MODEL PACK/GPL AND NAME TO BE CREDITED.

Cheers and thanks,
y00tz

Shouldn't all these models be in a .md2 format and textured? I'll be happy to do some texturing if people want to do some modeling for me?

Nope md2 sucks.  I'm only working with SKM now.

Every model I've ever used in game has been in SKM format, as is the pong ball.

Put this in your model pack and smoke it...

http://www.logictechnologies.com/keith/dp2models/ladder01.zip

Included in zip:
raw model - .3ds
max file - .max
photoshop file - .psd
master skin - .jpg
painted skin - jpg
authorization text - .txt

FYI: any readable company name is blurred out in the included skin.

OOPS...forgot...I didn't go by any specific palette when making that skin so it may look like ass in game. Stupid palette...get modern Jitspoe.

You have to unwrap the model.
Unwrapping is the process of laying the texture coordinates out flat so the painter will have accurate flat 2D surfaces to paint on.
Once the model is properly unwrapped the painter can paint the save unwrap skin and it will wrap back onto the model perfectly.
No other changes can be made to the model once it has been unwrapped or you will have to unwrap all over again, and the painted skin will no longer work.

P.S. unwrapping can be the most difficult part of the process, from model to game. Most kids that just start modeling absolutely refuse to even learn to unwrap because it can suck so bad (MVPB had 8 modelers that fit this category).

Don't be a wuss...learn to unwrap your own models.

Here's a start: http://www.logictechnologies.com/keith/tutorial/unwrap/uvunwrap.htm

Now all I need is a complete guide all I know how to do is make shapes like sphere tetrahedron etc. and move their faces vertices and edges around.

Skins use palettes? Thought that was only the .wal files, not the Jpegs.
