Beginner Server Hints and Tips
« on: December 06, 2007, 09:55:45 AM »
So, with some nice ideas coming out of the What drives away new players? thread, I think it would be great to start on some "helpful hints" for new players. These can then be used in any future implementations of the game which are perhaps shown when downloading maps, and more immediately that can be sent to some of the "Beginner" servers at regular intervals.

Remember that these messages will be shown in game, so it might better for them to be short, sweet and directly to the point. Although im not sure about this, what do you guys think?

So yeah what kind of messages would be helpful for a new player, and what kind of interval should they be sent to a server?

Well about interval. I think the best time to show em is during 5 seconds before round starts.

i was just going to send a random hint through rcon every so often to the server, so literally "console: <hint>", until something better is created (which i think sk89q/XBain might work on)

You can remove "console: " from the source (or the whole line in fact) and recompile :D

Press jump button twice quickly infront of an obstacle to do double jump.

Change your crosshair by typing: crosshair 5 (choose between 1-13)

Recon your team by pressing T (default) and then typing the message

Well it's early in the morning so I don't have any ideas. Will try to think of something else.

Thanks edge, I also have:

Register at the Official Forums at www.dplogin.com/forums
Press t to talk to everyone, and press y to talk to your team
Press ¬ to bring down the console and type in special commands
Check the official forums for cool High-Res textures at www.dplogin.com
Press  7 to reload your CO2 as soon as the round starts

What other little hints, bit of info and stuff would be useful for a beginner, but isnt readily apparent.

So far:

TIP: Register at the Official Forums at www.dplogin.com/forums
TIP: Press jump twice quickly in front of an obastacle to jump extra high
TIP: Press t to talk to everyone, and press y to talk to your team
TIP: Press ¬ to bring down the console and type in special commands
TIP: Change your crosshair by typing: crosshair 5 (choose between 1-13)
TIP: Check the official forums for cool High-Res textures at www.dplogin.com/forums
TIP: Press 7 to reload your CO2 as soon as the round starts
TIP: Keep moving and jumping around, it makes it alot harder to be shot
TIP: Type "fov 100" to get a better view, type "fov 90" to go back to the default
TIP: Pick a server with the lowest ping, this will reduce any "lag" you may feel
TIP: Don't argue or call people hackers, stay calm and earn respect!
TIP: Press forward+ left or right together to "strafe jump", it makes you move faster than walking
TIP: When you die, press p to follow a player. Press [ or ] to switch between different players
TIP: Join the Paintball Community on IRC to meet other players and join clans!
TIP: Use Headphones, it makes finding the direction of your opponents attack much easier
TIP: Your paintballs dip as you shoot, try aiming slightly higher than your target
TIP: gg means "good game" - ns means "nice shot" - nt means "nice toss (grenade)" or "nice try"

Don't know if simple ones like that are better than more beefed up ones.

I like them, I think that hints in the center of the screen showing up every once in a while will be the best, it will deter better players a bit too since they won't want "popup's" showing up in the middle of their screen and annoying them.

I never liked trying to read hints on load screens because I always wanted more than one or 2 a round, and sometimes load screens load to fast to read them   :P

But that might deter beginners too :P

I'm struggling to get any more to be honest. I'll probably add one about sk89q's site as that would be helpful for new players, the best one i've had feedback on is the crosshairs atm, something we really take for granted knowing.

I voted for this a LOOOONG time ago in the feature vote thread, long before the "what drives away new players" thread, but I dont think no one else voted for it.
